This page explains what this website, westcoasthome.ca, collects about you, why, and what you can do about it.

What you send us

Two forms on this site collect details from you.

  • Buyers guide and sellers guide: your first name, last name and email address.
  • Newsletter (market updates): your email address.

The site does not ask for your phone number or address in these forms.

What we do with it

  • The guide is emailed to the address you entered. We also send a notice to the business with your name and email address and which guide you asked for, so a team member from Leanne Robb PREC can follow up.
  • For the newsletter, we send a notice to the business with your email address.
  • Every submission is saved on our server as a lead: the details you entered, which form it came from, when it was sent, and whether our email went out. Only signed-in staff can see leads.
  • Emails are sent through an email delivery service, which handles the message in order to deliver it.
  • To stop one address from being sent the same guide over and over, the site keeps a scrambled (hashed) form of the address in memory for 24 hours. The address itself is not kept for this.

How long we keep it

Leads are kept for two years, then deleted automatically each night. Emails already sent are in the mailboxes they were sent to, and are managed there.

Cookies, analytics and maps

The business may use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful, and may show a Google map of the property on listing pages. If they are switched on:

  • Google Analytics and the map are not loaded, and set no cookies, until you press Accept in the cookie box. One choice covers both.
  • If you accept, Google Analytics counts the pages you open and when a guide or newsletter form is sent. It is told only that a form was sent, never your name, email address or what you typed.
  • If you accept, listing pages show the map automatically. When it loads, Google receives your IP address and browser details and may set its own cookies.
  • Advertising features are off: advertising storage is denied and Google signals are not used.
  • Google Analytics sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by part of the site’s measurement ID (the ID without its “G-”).
  • Decline loads nothing and sends nothing. Listing pages then show no map, only the address and an Open in Google Maps link, which sends nothing until you click it. Until you choose, it is the same as declining.
  • If you decline after accepting, counting stops and the _ga cookies are removed, and the map disappears. Cookies Google set while the map was shown belong to Google; the site can’t remove them, but you can in your browser’s settings.
  • To change your mind, use Cookie settings in the footer, or, when listing maps are on, in the Location section of a listing page.

Counting page views

The site counts how often each of its pages is opened, so the business can see which pages are visited. This count is made whether or not you accept cookies, because it can’t identify you:

  • When a page opens, your browser tells the site’s own server which page it is. Nothing is sent to anyone else.
  • The site keeps only the page and the hour, and adds one to a total. It stores no IP address, no description of your browser or device, no cookie and nothing else that could tell visits or visitors apart.
  • Staff signed in to the admin area and known search-engine robots are not counted.
  • The totals are kept for two years, then deleted automatically.

Other things stored in your browser

  • Your cookie choice is kept in your browser’s local storage under the name wch_analytics_consent. It stays on your device and is not sent anywhere.
  • Staff who sign in to the admin area get a sign-in cookie. Visitors do not, except for the listing search cookie described below.

Listing search

The listing search shows listings shared by members of The Canadian Real Estate Association through REALTOR.ca.

  • One cookie, wch_lv. When you open a listing, our server gives your browser a random ID in this cookie. It holds nothing else, lasts one year, can’t be read by scripts on the page and is sent only to our server. It does not depend on your analytics choice, because REALTOR.ca requires listing views to be counted.
  • What goes to REALTOR.ca. For each listing you view, our server tells REALTOR.ca’s statistics service the listing number, that random ID and your IP address. Nothing else about you is sent.
  • Photos. Listing photos and the “Powered by REALTOR.ca” logo load straight from REALTOR.ca’s servers, so your browser contacts them when a listing page opens.
  • Asking about a listing. The form on a listing page collects your first name, last name, email address, an optional phone number and your message. It goes to the team at Leanne Robb PREC by email and is kept like the other forms described above.
  • Search filters stay in the page address. They are not stored. Google Analytics, if you accept it, is told the listing number (in the page address) and the general title “Listing”. It is not told the address, the price or the listing’s own title.

Videos and social media

  • Videos on the home page are embedded from YouTube or Vimeo. They load from those services when the page opens, before you make any cookie choice, and may set their own cookies.
  • The links in the footer to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn are plain links. They send nothing to those sites until you click one; after that, that site’s own policies apply.

Server logs

The site’s server does not write what you type into the forms to its logs. It does record each visit’s IP address, a description of the browser and device, and the pages visited, for security and to limit abuse.

When a page tries to load something the site’s security rules don’t allow, your browser may send the site an automatic error report. From these reports the site’s own log lines record only the page and the address that was blocked, with no IP address or description of your browser. Like every request, the report is recorded with its IP address in the server’s access logs described above.
